Open letter to myself, and subsequently anyone who feels
procrastination is something they need to work on.
We students, teachers, parents,
workers, etc… as humans constantly battle to balance the demands of our
communities, jobs, and responsibilities with our primitive hypothalamic instincts
that drive our urges to eat, sleep, and sloth. Today’s quick pace society and
growing pressures to keep up with these demands cause many of us to
procrastinate to the last minute as we grow restless and our brain demands a
break. The busy nature of today’s demands causes a loop of procrastination that
repeats on and on. Despite the awareness of the problem, we often neglect to change
our habits which only continue the cycle of procrastination over and over. The incapacity to
break the cycle leaves us helpless in the long-term. The pressure of
procrastination is alleviated after a deadline, but what about things without a
deadline? Things such as spending time with family and friends, maintaining a
healthy lifestyle, and setting bucket lists get set off for later. With growing
habits of repeating the procrastination cycle, events without a deadline may
never be pursued. Thus, we as people need to assess our situations and change our
personal habits to avoid procrastination in order to pursue lifelong and
happiness instilling goals.
