Paragraph style

Determining the genetic correlates of behavior in T. gondii infection is important not only for the study of this parasite and its effect on the central nervous system, but also for discovering how the brain functions and how genetics relates to these functions. The human brain consists of over 100 billion neurons, each of which have a unique role in determining everything that we think, sense, or do. These 100 billion neurons can be further broken down morphologically, functionally, and by anatomical location into more than 10 thousand neuronal subtypes, revealing an unprecedented amount of cellular diversity and diversity of genomic expression in the brain. I intend to use the methods refined by studying the effects of T. gondii on neuronal genomic expression to discover more about how genes and cellular processes in the brain correlate with and explain complex behaviors. Determining the genetics behind behavior and other outputs of the brain is becoming more and more important as we learn about genetic diseases. It’s incredible that a mutation in a single gene that codes for a single protein can be responsible for changes in the brain that lead to a complex and detrimental disease, which is why genetics is becoming so important in neuroscience. By pursuing research targeted at genetic correlates of behavior, I can make a significant impact on the field of neuroscience by furthering our understanding of neurogenetics and how to study it, providing a foundation for future neurogenetic research and for possible translational research targeted at finding treatments for genetic disorders of the brain.

Purpose: To draw connections from the state of knowledge of the brain and current neuroscientific research to my research goals and contributions.

The human brain consists of over 100 billion neurons, each of which are divided into more than 10 thousand neuronal subtypes, revealing an unprecedented amount of cellular diversity and diversity of genomic expression in the brain. The methods refined by studying the effects of T. gondii on neuronal genomic expression can be used to discover more about how genes and cellular processes in the brain correlate with and explain complex behaviors. My intended research in determining the genetic correlates of behavior in T. gondii infection is important not only for the study of this parasite and its effect on the central nervous system, but also for bigger questions facing neuroscience. Determining the genetics behind behavior and other outputs of the brain is becoming more and more important as we learn about genetic diseases. By pursuing this research, I can make a significant impact on the field of neuroscience by furthering our understanding of neurogenetics and how to study it, providing a foundation for future neurogenetic research and possible translational research targeted at finding treatments for genetic disorders of the brain.
