Précis

In Steven Schwarze's 2006 Environmental Melodramain the  Quarterly Journal of Speech

published online in Nov of that year, he outlines set of guidelines in which melodrama is a necessary and valuable tool of rhetoric. Schwarze cites emotional appeals within environmentalism as a means to logically explain the effectiveness of melodrama. The authors final takeaway is that in the rhetorical conversation no one form of rhetoric is superior to another. Examining the use of certain code it would seem Schwarze is speaking to an scholarly audience which is familiar with rhetoric, probably his peers. He establishes this relationship with them by not appealing to ethos.
