The author of this essay is Steven Schwarze and published the work, "Environmental Melodrama," in the Quarterly Journal of Speech in 2006. His thesis consists of the idea that Melodrama is an often overlooked rhetorical strategy that can, under a certain set of conditions, be effective in reorganizing and/or reviving a protest movement. The development of the thesis was outlined with a historical background of the neglect of the role of melodrama in protest and set conditions with examples under which would disprove this idea. The purpose of the essay is to bring the rhetorical strategy of melodrama into the light of scholarly analysis as a potentially effective tool, contrary to popular belief. The audience in mind includes students and scholars of protest rhetoric. This relationship is established by providing relevant historical context, defining terms, and drawing from examples relevant to that of analytic protest.
