The Kanye West statement "George Bush doesn't care about black people" during a hurricane Katrina benefit show
The comment I'm referring to is HERE! watch til the end
The Who and What: When hurricane Katrina hit and the nation saw the devastation, tons of artists and entertainers joined forces for the concert for hurricane relief One of those artist was the outspoken rapper/producer Kanye West. During a live showing West along with actor/comedian Mike Myers were to give the viewers info on how to donate, West took the liberty of ad-libbing his lines and looked straight into the camera and said "George Bush doesn't care about black people!"
The object here would be the entire statement. Mr. West, like many others, were expressing their displeasure with the delayed response and reaction of then president Bush of aid to New Orleans. A pretty powerful claim, but if we've followed his career in any way we know this was only the beginning.
The where: The concert took place at the famous Rockefeller plaza in New York, NY, but the statement was talking about what occurred or what had NOT occurred in New Orleans.
The When: The concert was broadcasted live on September 2, 2005, five days after the devastating hurricane was at peak strength over New Orleans.
Why: Kanye West has never been afraid to say what he's thinking. This statement is a prime example of that. West wanted to show his frustration with the lack of response and the timeliness of it to an area which was heavily populated with African American and other minorities. Certainly people have their opinion of the rapper, its not always necessarily favorable but at this point in his career, in 2005, he was still a relatively new solo artist but he felt he needed to say what so many others wanted to say.
