Who/what: Marlon Brando was an American actor and activist. He starred as Vito Corleone in The Godfather (1972) and was nominated for the Oscar Award in 1973 ("Marlon Brando"). Sacheen Littlefeather was at the time and currently is an activist for Native American Rights. She represented Brando at the ceremony in his place. The "object" is her appearance and her speech at the ceremony, as well as Brando's declining of the award.

Where: Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles, at the 45th Academy Awards ceremony ("45th Academy Awards")

When: March 27, 1973 ("45th Academy Awards")

Why: Marlon Brando did not show up to the Academy Awards ceremony and instead had actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather come in his place to deny the award to protest the treatment of Native Americans in the film industry and in media. At the time of this event, the incident of Wounded Knee was a recent occurrence in which Native American protesters were killed through government intervention ("Wounded Knee Incident"). The act of denying the award as well as having Littlefeather, a memeber of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committe represent him allowed for all attending and watching the ceremony to hear his outcry against unfair treatment of Native Americans.
