Violence Agaisnt Women

TURKEY-CRIME-WOMEN-RIGHTS

WHO/WHAT: The Violence Against Women protest has been a protest which has been an ongoing petition against gender violence. Over 50,000 people have marched in Peru's capital and either other cities in order to stress the importance of gender equality. The protest also addresses the need to give higher sentences to perpetrators in recent cases as the courts have been lenient. This march has been triggered after the death of a 20 year old Turkish College Student named Ozgecan Aslan who was slain on her way home from school.

WHERE: The protest started in Lima, Peru and branched off to Mexico, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentine and Brazil.

WHEN: The protest begain on February, 2015.

WHY: After the death of Ozgecan Aslan, it sent women all over the Middle East into an uproar. The goal of the protest was to enforce harsher sentences on men who still believed that women are to be treated with the least amount of respect and were looked down upon if they attended school or were out "too late".

IDENTITIES: This protest reaches out to women who have suffered at the hands of a male simple for being a woman. It helps to show that women should be viewed as equal to men as nothing should be limited by gender.
