Citizen post

Citizen Post

Citizen by Claudia Rankine is a poetry book put together to bring awareness to racism in America. It’s a powerful book that has hidden messages throughout each and every poem. The poems feature no title only adding to how secretive each poem is. The pictures also add to each one. With each illustration lending to which reading it is by. Page 102 has an image that gives a message that tells us that all people are the same. No matter what what color of the skin. This book hits upon how racism is still alive in our country. It’s a never ending war that Claudia has experienced all to well. You can feel the emotion coming from Claudia bursting through every single line and page. It is a book that you can easily lose yourself in. It makes me aware of what she has gone through. The pictures again only add to that even more, with each one adding more and more to each page of writing. This is a book that can continue to educate people and continue to bring awareness to the issue of race. The picture of the deer with the human face is one that also evokes emotion and questions. One question is are we the deer? Is she saying that we as American follow along blindly like a deer would in the headlight. The book does what very little other books do and that is force us to dig and question, and Claudia has done it better than any other people could ever want to do. The art form of being a protest book only adds to the style and the questions that she poses to us throughout the book. It talks about the challenges African American's have faced and continue to face, it's a book providing a powerful message and offers a deep insightful look.
