Through the Worlds and Ages
Who/What: During the height of the Soviet Union, and the space race, propaganda depicting the Soviet Union in space was extremely popular. To gain the attention of the Russian people, the USSR produced posters like this in mass to gain support during the space race. This was intended to entice people to get involved in trades that would support the USSR's mission to space. In a communist society, where everyone is prompted to work, it was crucial that the working people also worked toward space.
Where/When: During the Space Race in the USSR.
Why: The USSR and the United States of America were in competition to see who would travel to space first. The USSR, determined to beat the USA in the space race, produced propaganda like this to target it's populous. Propaganda was widely used in the USSR, usually depicting a happy working class in an egalitarian society. However, posters like Through the Worlds and Ages, illustrated the Soviet Union's ever pressing mission to get to space.
Identity: This poster, and others like it, are indicative to the identity of the Soviet Union. Now when studying Soviet history, it is very common to study propaganda posters. These posters were put on the sides of trains, along the streets, all through the entire country pushing the idea of a new found communist identity. These propaganda posters assisted in the creation of the Soviet identity, and once that identity was solidified the messages changed to promote more specific ideas, like Through the Worlds and Ages.
