Ted Talk (Hyeonseo Lee): North Korean Refugee

Who/what: This Ted Talk is a presentation given by activist Hyeonseo Lee - a young woman who escaped from North Korea. Her life in North Korea drastically changed during the famine in the 1990s - a famine that killed more than a million people. She then realized that the great country she once believed in, was nothing but a lie.  This video gained a generous amount of response and has been a medium to spread awareness on the terrible conditions in North Korea.

Where: Her story took place in North Korea, and later, in China during her escape, and South Korea. She presented her story at a Ted Conference.

When: Hyeonseo Lee shared her story on February, 2013.

Why: Lee’s use of sharing her own personal story is a form of protest: collecting admirers, supporters, followers, and hopefully, to her desire, people standing up for the injustice inflicted upon the people of North Korea.

Identities: There are several identities that Lee is interested in articulating through protest by sharing the details of her past. One, Lee is both an individual and a collective body fighting for human rights for the people of her native country – North Korea - and for the mistreated around the world. Secondly, Lee is a refugee, sharing her journey that can be identified with between refugees all over the world.
