Who/What: Dan Savage, gay activist and blogger, called upon his fans to 'reclaim' presidential candidate Rick Santorum's last name in 2012. This was in protest to Santorum's claims that homosexuality was alike to pedophilia. Savage led his fans in creating an internet sensation out of Santorum, and if you google Rick Santorum you will find that his last name is also the definition of a very sexually explicit act.
Where: In 2012, through the gay community and straight allies, Savage created Santorum's self proclaimed 'google problem' which in turn negatively affected his campaign.
Why: To deter Santorum from creating more anti gay claims, Savage personally embarrassed Santorum. Although this was a successful strategy, many would argue that although it was humorous it was unethical. Savage, through defacing Santorum, made a name for himself. Now, many people know him as the blogger who gave Rick Santorum a 'google problem'.
Identity: Dan Savage is a gay activist and blogger who, after witnessing attacks on his community by presidential candidate Rick Santorum, took matters into his own hands and 'reclaimed' Santorum's last name, giving him what Santorum calls a 'google problem'.
