Citizen is Protest for sure 100%
1. Our group fell pretty far right on the line, and we believe that Citizen is about 90% protest.
2. The entire work "Calls out" and brings awareness to the struggles that black people face in everyday situations simply because of race. This makes it a protest as it is establishing a problem within society which is the first step in a protest. Additionally the fact that she chose to publish a very charged book and disseminating the work in and of itself is an act of protest.
3. We pulled evidence from both the literature and the pictures in the book. One great image was the lynching picture on page 91, where the bodies have been removed. This supports the idea that the work is an act of protest because the bodies have been removed leaving the clear faces of the crowd as the focal point of the image. It draws attention to the perpetrators and not just the crime, and it seems to be questioning the society that allowed such acts to take place.
Another example is on page 42, where Rankine talks about Don Imu and his use of racially charged language on national radio. She's not just commentating on the act itself but by calling attention to raciest media she is participating in protest.
Also the deer on page 14 in the headlights is symbolic of how of how black people in this country constantly feel in a society that is always working against them.
