Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France

Edmund Burke was an English statesman and critic of the French Revolution. The letter in which he criticizes the use of force that was present during the French Revolution, although this writing was written before the reign of terror began.

The revolution was a pretty hot topic and I'm pretty sure this piece of literature was a top seller in its time.

I always found this writing fascinating because, when one reads about the French revolution and the hardships that the civilians endured, it's easy to sympathize with their motives and desire for retribution. Taking an opposing stand and defending the social system prior to the bloodshed just seemed difficult to me, but Burke's writings are rather persuasive in their composition even if you disagree with his decision.
