"You Stole Our Future From Us"

Pro-European campaigners protest against the result of the EU referendum outside Parliament Square, London

Who/what: This is a sign made to protest the Brexit decision from the perspective of British youth. Young people in the United Kingdom protest the referendum decision to leave the European Union. For many young people in the United Kingdom, being a part of the European Union provided a wealth of opportunity by allowing them to easily seek work in other countries. With the recent decision, students now feel robbed of their future and this generation has established an identity that will be defined by this decision.

Where: In the UK, hundreds of people, not just youths, have taken to the streets to demonstrate against the decision that was likely fueled by anti-immigration sentiments. Notably, Scotland and Northern Ireland both voted to remain in the EU, while most of England voted to leave and won the vote.

When: The Brexit vote occurred on June 23, 2016 and since then a huge amount of protest has occurred. One of the groups that will be most affected by this decision is young people in the UK, like those holding the sign in a London protest in June after a petition to hold a second referendum reached 2 million signatures.

Why: For young people who may no longer be able to take advantage of the EU’s free trade policies, their futures have changed in a way that is much different than generations before them. Thus, it seems as though they are part of a new identity that is manifesting itself in the protests that have been seen in the UK since the Brexit vote. The sign, “You stole our future from us,” is representative of their sentiments, as many people’s futures may be negatively impacted by the decision.
