WHO/WHAT: The song above is "Born in the U.S.A." written and performed by rock legend Bruce Springsteen. The song although upbeat and catchy is about the lives of Vietnam war veterans after the war ended. Despite this fact, the song regularly played at mass patriotic social events, such as fairs, sporting events or around patriotic holidays. Even though the song is essentially calling out America for how poorly it had been treating the returning Vietnam war veterans.

WHEN: The song was released October 30, 1984.

WHERE: All across the world, however the song was mainly circulated through the U.S. and Europe.

WHY: Bruce Springsteen created the song to show Americans the mistakes they had made in not taking care of the veterans of the Vietnam war, and to protest the war and sending so many young Americans to their deaths. In his song he talks about a boy being sent off at a young age to kill the "yellow man" in a foreign country . He then goes on to sing about his return home, and how how the young boy can't find any work, and all he finds is excuses even from his V.A. (Veteran Affairs department).

IDENTITY: The identity shown with this song is the phrasing in the lyrics "Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A."by repeating it as the chorus over and over, Springsteen mocked the idea that America was truly as free as everyone was being led to believe. A jab at a system in which old men were waging wares, while the young men were being sent out to fight them.
